Developing using web standards
Developing using web standards is a must for developers aspiring to create accessible, usable and well-coded websites.
A site that has been built to web standards generally will be:
- Less bandwidth intense
- Future-proof
- Extensibility
- Easier to maintain
- Compatible with newer browsers
- Accessible
Here are a few of the best links for learning more about web standards:

Very well presented information about web standards including tutorials, reference materials, articles and interviews. The Web Standards Project is a grassroots coalition fighting for standards which ensure simple, affordable access to web technologies for all.
World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential. The link will take you to XHTML recommendations page. This is an excellent resource although I find it less user friendly than the Web Standards Project’s site.
Web Standards Group
The WSG desribes itself as a resource for web designers & developers who are interested in web standards (HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, XSLT etc.) and best practices (accessible sites using valid and semantically correct code). The link above takes you to a three step guide featured on this site for designing standards-compliant websites.
W3C Sites
W3C Sites is a collection of web sites created by designers that conform with the W3C standards. A great inspirational collection for web designers and developers alike.
